How to Determining the Efficiency of Oil-Immersed Distribution Transformers?
Power Losses:
No-Load Losses: No-load losses, also known as core losses, occur due to the magnetization of the transformer's core and the associated eddy current and hysteresis losses. These losses are present even when the transformer is not under load and are primarily influenced by the core material and design.
Load Losses: Load losses, or winding losses, occur due to the resistance of the windings and the associated I⊃2;R (current squared times resistance) losses. These losses increase as the transformer's load increases, and they are influenced by the winding design, conductor material, and load current.
Stray Losses: Stray losses are caused by eddy currents induced in the transformer's metal components, such as the tank, clamps, and other structural parts, due to the changing magnetic field. These losses are typically small but should be accounted for in the overall efficiency calculation.
Efficiency Calculation:
The efficiency of an oil-immersed distribution transformer is typically expressed as the ratio of the output power to the input power, and it is calculated using the following formula:
Efficiency = (Output Power / Input Power) × 100%
To determine the input and output power, the transformer's no-load losses and load losses are measured using specialized test equipment and procedures.
Load-Dependent Efficiency:
The efficiency of an oil-immersed distribution transformer is not constant but rather varies with the load. The transformer is typically most efficient at or near its rated load, where the no-load losses and load losses are balanced.
At lighter loads, the no-load losses become a more significant portion of the total losses, reducing the overall efficiency. Conversely, at heavier loads, the load losses become more dominant, also leading to a decrease in efficiency.
